Traditional tripura attire: Rina and Risai


Tripura people, a great number of indigenous community live in Bangladesh and India. In Bangladesh the people live in Chittagong Hill Tracts and also in plain areas like Sylhet.


The Tripura society is consisted with their own distinguishable culture, music, dance, attire, folk song and festivals etc. Of course, it is known that they speak their own mother language called ‘Kokborok'. The people have their own traditional attire which is crafted.


They weave their own dresses proudly which has been continuing since years. The women hold a great role to play in this regard. With time, the evolution of the attire are observed sometimes where there is some signs of newness.


The male and female dress of Tripura is known differently. The male wear dhuti mainly. Also with that, they also use a towel or Gamcha like costume called as Rikutu that is worn with a shirt named Kubai. All these are traditionally weaved.


The female dress is interesting in nature as it has two parts including the accessories. It has both the upper parts and lower part. The upper part is used for covering the chest which is Risa. It is a piece of small clothing full of gorgeous embroideries. It is the special part. Now the lower part that is worn from waist to knees and a very large of clothing that is called Rinai.


Women wear plethora of beads and coin strands for enhancing the beauty of neck which are normally heavy in character. More clothes are seen worn in time of occasions. The female wear cotton fabric similar as peticoat. During the work of outisde, women wear headdresses too for the purpose to protect themselves from the heat of sun and on the other hand the male sometimes wear pagri for the same obejct.
