Achik mandi is the language of Garo indigenous people of Bangladesh. It is one of the old and ancient community of Bangladesh but they are both ignorant and quite neglected. But being under british reign, garo people’s linguistic aspect got enriched.
John Elliott, a british Commissioner from dacca took the initiative to make a compilation of garo words and became the known first man to contribute in Garo language and literature. He could know about Garo people and their language after being a member of Public Deputation to Garo hills in 1788-89. He published his thoughts and information of garo language in his "The Asiatic Researches Vol 3" in 1779 by the name of "Observation of the inhabitants of the Garo hills"
Garo Language got attention for the first time during the reign of British. They put it in their writings. After John Elliot, many British officials and writers who came to Garo Hill wrote their own experience and some Garo words and vocabulary too. After the fast and smart invasion of missionaries they stood up for garo people and took up the task to put down the language of garo people in Dictionaries and translation of Bible. From british to missionaries garo language or achik mandi was nurtured by the people of many races and classes because of the calm,mild and loving nature of Garo people of Garo hills.
