The mysterious Dragon Lake

Updated: Sep 3, 2021

Allegedly mythological creatures like dragons existed in Ruma Upazilla of Bandarban District about 2000 years ago. "Bagakain", commonly known as Baga Lake is the most beautiful natural lake in Bangladesh. The Lake is abundant with green due to the immense expanse of trees scattered all over the place. There are hills, both small and big in size, rocks, and cliffs, and together they create an illusion of a massive static wave which has covered the whole surrounding. It is an ideal place to taste the ultimate bliss of nature. The lake water is naturally sweat and deep water. As the lake is full of underwater kelp-like vegetation that entangle unsuspecting swimmers, swimming is restricted in this lake. The pristine water of Boga Lake surrounded by the wilderness attracts most of the attention about the place. There is no outlet for draining out water from the lake. Winter is the most convenient time to visit the place.

In 1973, when geologist surveyed the lake, they found the lake to be too acidic for any aquatic life form. Later, by the year 1995, the lake became abundant with plants and fishes. Geologists assume the lake is either crater of an inactive mud volcano or it was formed due to falling of meteorites from the outer space and collection of rain water in the cave area in summer. Anthropologists, geologists and chemical experts are trying to solve the mystery of the Boga lake while the locals tell us about the mythological stories surrounding the creation of the lake. A local legend tells, after a local villager of Khumi tribe killed a god, the god reappeared in the form of a dragon causing earthquakes that made hills to break and crumble forming the lake.

Every spring the color of the lake changes. It is suspected that there is a HOT SPRING at the bottom of the lake which is responsible for the change of color of the lake. While enjoying the magnificent view of the mysterious Boga Lake, the lake will not only make us think of the scenic beauty of nature but also the wonders of the universe and the things we are yet to discover.
