The living Dictionary of the Garo community: Sir Revarendra Manindranath Marak


"Taking the risk of my life, I changed the translation of their message and alerted the freedom fighters and teachers to go to a safe place."


Coming from Hariaund Mouza of Birishiri Union of Durgapur Upazilla of Netrokona District, Sir Revarendra Manindranath Marak (82) is called the living dictionary of the Garo community. He spent most of his life fighting for the rights of the Garo community. His wife Pratima Marak (78) is also an activist of Indigenous women's rights.


Revarendra Manindranath Marak is deeply interested in literature, art and culture, humanity, history, reading, writing and indigenous peoples rights, Garo rights,etc. His writings involve rights, history, religion, economy, culture of the Garo people and land rights of the indigenous people of Bangladesh.


Although he could not participate in the liberation war directly, he helped the freedom fighters by providing various information. The bunker of the Pakistani military raiders was located in the field of the school he was a teacher of. The commander would send him the letters to translate them for the Pakistani military raiders (Hanadar Bahini). Once he receives a letter for translation from the commander that states to murder the teachers, intellectuals, local leaders and the freedom fighters. Although frightened he then tactfully changed the translation of the message. After that he alerted the freedom fighters and others and took shelter in the Tura refugee camp of India with his parents.


After the liberation of Bangladesh, he volunteered for the education of the elderly program. Garo Baptist Convention(GBC) Education Board, Cultural Academy, NGO council, Missionary council provided him memorial of honour.


His 5 books are: গারো ব্যাপটিস্ট কনভেনশনের ইতিহাস(২০১৫), রচনা সমগ্র (২০২১), গারো সংস্কৃতি (২০১৮), বিরিশিরি মিশন এবং ব্যাপটিস্ট মন্ডলীর ইতিহাস (২০১৮). Many of his writings are published by the Birishiri Cultural Academy.
