Suhrid Chakma: Taking a glance at the Chakma Poet of the British age.


The Poetry Culture among Chakmas is getting decreased day by day. So let's get inspired to break that curve from a high achieving Chakma Poet who lived only 30 years but left a lot to learn for the community.


Poet Suhrid Chakma was born on June 20, 1956, in Baghaichhari under the Dighinala police station in Khagrachhari district. His nickname was Lockon. Father Prafulla Kumar Chakma, mother Deni Chakma. Suhrid was the second child of Prafulla and Deni couple's seven children. He completed his undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Bengali language and literature from Jahangirnagar University. While studying at Jahangirnagar University, he lived in room 229-D of Alberuni Hall. While studying at Jahangirnagar University, a complaint was lodged against him in the Secretariat for printing a little magazine called "Bonaful" without permission.

At 4 pm on Friday, February 26, 1971, a discussion meeting got held at the Tribal Students Hostel on Sir Syed Road in Dhaka. In that meeting, Rangamati Aesthetics Council got initiated. The main initiators of Ra-K were Susmoy Chakma and Suhrid Chakma. They both studied at Jahangirnagar University. At the time, Chakma was studying geography. The ideology and goal of Ra-K's constitution were to say that since Rak is an aesthetic board, it believes that art is for art, for life, and humanity. The organization is now known as Jum Aesthetics Council.


Suhrid Chakma was married on January 31, 1982, to Archana Talukder. After graduating from Jahangirnagar, he joined Boalkhali Parbatya Chattal Buddhist Orphanage High School in Dighinala as a teacher under the guidance of Srimat Bimal Tishya Bhikkhu, Srimat Pragyananda Bhikku Pramukhs. From there, he later joined the wife at the Monghar Children's Home. He later took over as the general manager of the administration as work in Monghar increased. He was also the caretaker of the "Friendship Building" in Monoghar. He once promised Mangalkumar Chakma Usai (Tribal Cultural Institute) to stage a Chakma play. At that time, another teacher from Monghar asked Shantimoy Chakma to write a play because they did not have a space that the play could stage. Shantimoy was a student of Bengali literature. As a result, Shantimoy Chakma wrote "Yeh Dinot Yeh Kal" in the context of CHT in the shadow of British playwright William Congreve's "The Way of the World." The play was staged at the Town Hall in Phulbiju in 1984.

His famous book of poetry "Bargi" was published in 1986 by the Zoom Aesthetics Council. He was instrumental in establishing the Jumiya Language Promotion Office (Juvaprad). He was simultaneously an essayist, storyteller, critic. Suhrid Chakma wrote nine essays, four stories, and one book of poetry.

Suhrid Chakma, a creative, talented organizer, lived only 30 years. Chakma Sahitya Kshanjanma This poet dreamed of aesthetics. Unfortunately, Suhrid Chakma went missing on the night of August 6, 1986. However, this creative young man will live among us.
