Representation of culture , tradition, patience and fine art skills through hand weaved Pinon Khadi

Pinon Khadi is the traditional attire of the women of Chakma community. "Pinon" is the cloth that is wrapped around the lower portion of body and "Khadi" is wrapped around the upper portion of the body.

The artistic visuals of the Pinon Khadi represents the perseverance, hard-working nature and fine art skills of Chakma women. Pinon Khadi is hand weaved. It requires about a month to prepare a full set of Pinon Khadi. Although the expert weavers can do it in 15-20 days, that too depending on the design of the dress.

This process of preparing the attire is lengthy and tedious. Washing the threads, drying them in proper sunlight, flattening it, then arranging them in an order in the instruments and finally sitting to weave the Pinon Khadi. This preparation of the threads takes about 2-3days. After this, the real weaving starts which continues for 20-30days. The weaver sits for hours and hours along to prepare the piece of cloths.

In the recent days, the demand of Pinon Khadi is high in rise because of it's colorful, artistic and elegant nature. Pinon Khadi is also highly fashionable and a point of interest for the fashion designers. The weaver and designers have come far away from making the regular Pinon Khadi. At present different designs are found other than the traditional plain Pinon Khadi. The main variation comes in the "Sabugi" of the pinon. The "Sabugi" of the Pinon has 3/4 parts; "Shamoles", "Dik", "Puttum" and "Rummer". By modifying design of the "Sabugi" or by adding flowers into the weaving variety is brought into the Pinon.

Not only the people of Chakma community wear the attire but also foreigners and Bengalis are interested in buying them these days because of it's artistically appealing nature. By wearing traditional attires, the culture and and tradition of the Chakma community can be preserved and saved from getting extinct.
