Maini River : Poor State of the Mighty River at present

Situated in Dighinala Upazila, the eastern portion of Bangladesh, Maini river is an important and efficient part for the village people residing beside the bank of the river. It is flowing in the both Khagrachhari and Rangamati zilla. Having the length of 109km and an average width of 62 meter, it has the spiracural composition.

The short history about this river is that once it was a reserved place which got open in 1965 for the people getting homeless because of the construction of Kaptai Dam in 1960 and then a part of them started their livelihood here although most of the people were migrated in the neighbouring country. Gradually, it became a human habitation that got extensive.

This river has been a great help and a part and parcel for the farmers and fishermen. The evergreen Maini river has become a source of living for them. There is always the cultivation of different types of crops near the two banks of this river. It has been a witness of the sufferings and happiness of the villagers from generation to generation. So an emotional, social, economical attachment is present there but it is a matter of great regret that nowadays the river is on the verge of death.

Many documentaries and writings have been published regarding the pollution of the river. The concerned people talk about the overuse of fertilizers are polluting it day by day. Also the chemical garbages are being mixed with the river. The greedy people are misusing it for their personal purpose. It is being filled up with soil for personal using as well as the forests situated near the river are geeting cut. So, it is now under the threat of annihilation. Proper steps should be taken to redress this problem.
