Lushai: A hunter tribe having distinct religious beliefs and lifestyle


Lushai is a small ethnic group from Bangladesh. If you have ever been to "Sajek" the most visited tourist spot in Bangladesh then you must be familiar with the Lushai tribe. Lushai's mostly reside in the Chittagong Hills area of Bangladesh also in North-East India and Myanmar. In India, they are commonly known as Mizo people. They identify themselves as descendants of the Mongol people. They are named after Mount Lushai.

Lushai lives on Jhum Cultivation and hunting wild animals Once they were known as the Head Hunter community. Nowadays most of them could be found in the jobs sector and other economic fields.


The Lushai people are enriched for their culture and their songs, traditional dresses, and famous for Cheraw Dance (Bamboo Dance) is the most popular culture dance in south Asia

The Lushai people originally believed in a Creator or Pathiel. They believe that after the death of someone, the soul of the deceased lives in a mortuary called 'Mithikhua'. During their stay in Mithikhua, everyone will be judged on their own merits. According to karma, they will be able to go to gold (pial resal). August is considered the standard of departure from the earth to Mithikhua (Thi Tin Thla) and for that Lushai Society does not organize any events or entertainment programs in August. This custom is still followed by today's generation. The Lushai people were once monotheists and believers in omnipotence. They believed in ghosts, demons, and used to worship rivers for ghosts and demons. But letter Lushai’s converted to Christianity and follow Christianity as their religion.

In addition to religious festivals, they celebrate three major festivals a year: Chapcharakuta (spring festival) Meemutut (in memory of dead souls), and Palkut (harvest festival). There are also Chapchar Kut, Minkut, Pal. Mongkut Festival - This festival is celebrated when the mowing of the jhum is over and also Chapchar Kut- Luisha's Nabanna festival.
