Indigenous People protest to protect ancient crematorium in Madhupur


Demonstrations have been held in the deep forest of Madhupur in Tangail demanding the closure of the garden and boundary wall of the forest department around the centuries-old crematorium of the Mandis (Garo).

The program was held under the banner of agitated indigenous students and people of Madhupur in Telki Bazar area at 11 am on Sunday.

But women, men and students of different ages started coming from the t villages in the morning. They took part in the protest by standing on the telki of Madhupur-Mymensingh road with festoons written in front of their chests. Everybody was saying- this forest is as far as my home, stop building guest house on crematorium in Telki, when there is lack of oxygen in Madhupur, there is a festival to cut down trees and build guest house, stop natural forest by destroying natural forest, withdraw false case against us , Form a separate independent land commission for the plains dwellers.

Indigenous people raised four demands from the rally. The demands are to immediately stop the implementation of projects including construction of walls and other related structures at the centuries-old crematorium in the name of so-called arboretum in the village of Telki, not to implement any project on agricultural and crop lands owned by the Indigenous people , cancel the declaration of national parks and protected forests. And to recognize the traditional land rights of the indigenous and to form separate land commissions for the plains people .

A seven-day ultimatum was announced from the rally. If the work on the project is not stopped within these seven days, the tribal students-youth-people of Madhupur warned that they will take more stringent measures including road blockade.
