Five years of the Langadu communal attack , still justice not yet brought to come!

“If it was not a planned attack, they wouldn't have brought petrol and other flammable materials with them and burnt down our houses,”

“Many of those who took part in the attacks carried bottles full of petrol and octane, which were hurled at our houses after looting.”

“Seeing the rowdy settlers rushing aggressively, I fled the shop and went into hiding in a nearby jungle,”

“Seeing two rowdy Bengali settlers wielding sharp weapons, we ran to the jungle. We were there till 4:00pm when police and other Chakma people came and rescued us,”

“If not, why had they bought petrol with them in the procession?”

“It proves that they came to loot and attack us and drive us out of the area.”

All of these statements were given by the victims of the Langadu communal attack. Can you imagine their frightened faces and scared to death that they had to flee to save their lives ? Was it another way to drive them away from their own lands ?

On this day five years ago, the Bengali settlers carried out a communal attack on four indigenous villages in Langadu following the incident of a settler's death. The death body of a hired motorcyclist named Nurul Islam Nayan was found at four miles of Khagrachhari-Dighinala road

prior to the communal attack in 2017. The communal attack was carried out on the pretext of blaming the Jummas without any evidence of who or what had abducted them.

More than two hundreds of houses and shops were burnt to ashes. The villagers fled for their lives leaving behind all their valuables and belongings. An 80-year old woman named Gunbala Chakma got burnt to death as she could not escape.

On the other hand, most of the accused involved in the incident are still under arrest or out of law and they are roaming around in public. Moreover, two separate false cases filed by two settler Bengalis named Md. Mahbub Mia and Md. Marfat Ali against the Jummas conspiratorially has not been withdrawn yet.

The administration is still procrastinating over the burning of eighty-year-old Gunemala Chakma alive during a house fire. Although the burnt bones of Gunemala Chakma were taken for DNA test, the administration has kept the matter under wraps. His family has not yet received any adequate compensation.

The government and the state have indiscriminately acquitted all of them. Thus, due to the lack of justice, the incidents of communal attacks and arson after another have been increasing on the indigenous people.
