“I can & I will.” states Jasper Lalkawmsang on 12th June in his Facebook status, sharing the latest of the so far few articles covering his dream to become a Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) winner.

The twenty-three year old cagefighter’s determination is a refreshing sight for the indigenous community who for so long have been alienated from opportunities, or oppressed into meekness. On the other hand, Jasper from the Keokaradang Hills of Bandarban, who has been making a name for himself since 2017, has his eyes dead-set on competing in the prestigious UFC, a feat no Bangladeshi has ever been close to achieving, let alone someone with minority roots. Looking back on his history, it’s easy to see why he’s so ambitious.

Only a year into competing professionally, by 2018 Jasper has swept the champion awards for each of his five national fights, effectively becoming the country’s greatest MMA amateur player. His glory even extends internationally, with his victory against Fahad Solanki in the Boom MMA event in Kolkata in 2019, and later against Kiran Ghag in the Soul of Warriors-1 in 2020 organised in the same city. Currently ranked 83rd in the Tapology Regional Ranking of the Asia South Pro Men’s Bantamweight, ‘The Hilly Beast’ indeed seems a most apt nickname for the athlete.

Jasper’s introduction to the mixed martial arts world happens through taekwondo. Besides that, he’s gotten ample opportunity for sports during his school life in Bogra, Rajendrapur and Dhaka Cantonment, where he has spent most of his youth due to his father’s occupation. Ever determined, the cage fighter now dreams of himself not only participating in the UFC, but also bringing home the champion trophy and proudly representing his country in the bubble of mixed martial arts by “raising the national flag on the world stage”. In order to fulfil such lofty goals, his training in Thailand will soon commence with a grant of two lakh taka. Jasper believes the training is crucial in order to be selected.

Fans all over the country have yielded an overwhelming amount of support for their Hilly Beast’s endeavours, and they have unshakeable belief in his abilities. From Indigenous Exclusive as well, we wish our pride the best of luck.
