Dr.Mong Sano Marma


Dr. Mong Sano Marma initiated the genome sequencing research to unravel the genome mystery of Hilsha, the national fish of Bangladesh. Dr. Marma is not only a scientist, but also an educator and social worker. He was born in a middleclass family of Singhinala village, Mahalchari Upazilla under Khagrachari District. He stood first class first in BSc (Honours) exam from Chemistry department of Dhaka University, currently Dr. Marma working as a Principal Scientist at Miltenyii Biotech Research Institute in Boston, USA. He holds a Masters’ degree from Japan and did his PhD in synthetic organic and bio-organic chemistry from the University of Southern California in 2005. Then, he worked as a researcher in Columbia University from 2005 to 2007.

Dr. Mong Sano was a favourite student of Humayun Ahmed, renowned novelist of Bangladesh. Humayun Ahmed has encouraged, and inspired Mong Sano Marma, while Dr Ahmed was a faculty in Dhaka University. Dr. Mong has reminisced about his favourite teacher Humayun Ahmed. Indeed, Dr. Marma is a famous disciple of a famous guru.

Many important inventions in the field of DNA sequencing Technologies invented by Dr. Marma have been recognized by the US Patent Office. He is really working hard to spread the light of education in the underdeveloped areas of the Chittagong Hill Tracts. Back in 2006, in the remote village of Durchhari of Manikchhari Upazilla in Khagrachhari district, ‘Bishakha Private Primary School’ was established by Scientist Dr. Mong Sano. Now, the school is spreading the light of education. When the school was established, the school was deprived of many facilities due to poor transportation; But with the help of Local Administration Dr. Marma has successfully developed the transportation route for the school. Not only Durachhari Bishakha School, but also for the sake of quality education and to build an international standard educational institution, Dr. Mong has established ‘Kalapani Elephant Hills School’ in Kalapani village of Guimara upazila, Khagrachhari District. He is implementing the dream of providing international quality education to the children of the poor and marginalized.


He wants to increase the quality of education in underdeveloped areas like the Chittagong Hill Tracts. He is working to build a generation which is free from superstitions and to build science-minded generations by establishing educational institutions in backward areas. It is an inspiration for us that this Bangladeshi scientist is spreading the light of education from his deep affection for the motherland in the midst of thousands works. Let the light of quality education spread to all the remote villages of the country, Kalapani School or Vishakha School is a perfect example of this. People like Mong Sano Marma are the dreamers of building a beautiful Bangladesh, who are constantly working to make the development of the country sustainable.
