Do you know that the one and only Monarchy exists in Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh?


(Photo credit : Collected from Facebook.) Chakma Circle, Bomang Circle and Mong Circle altogether are the historical monarchies based in Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh. The Chief of Chakma Circle is Barrister Raja Devashish Roy. This Chakma Circle is situated in Rangamati. Besides, Bomang circle is in Bandarban and U Chaw Prue Chowdhury is the chief of Bomang Circle. And Mong Circle is handled by Raja Saching Prue Chowdhury .

The first series of Monarchies of Chittagong Hill Tracts is about Chakma Circle.


The dominance of the Chakma kings among the three kings began thousands of years ago. The British ,the Government of Pakistan and independent Bangladesh recognized the powers, responsibilities and existence of the three kings of the Chittagong Hill Tracts. The Chakma Circle Chief, as worded such by the Colonial-era British Indian Administration, administers justice , rulings on indigenous customary law, legally authorized by CHT Regulation 1 of 1900 with the powers of a magistrate subject to the authority of the deputy commissioner .

Raja Devasish Roy is the 51st Raja to be ascended to the throne on 25th December of 1977. Raja Devasish Roy is the 51st Raja to be ascended to the throne on 25th December of 1977. He is UK-Trained Barrister with over 44 years of experience of serving local residents in judicial , land and revenue jurisdictions. He is very famous among the chakma people.


In 1960, 54000 acres of arable land including the Chakma Rajbari in Rangamti were flooded due to the construction of the Kaptai Dam.

At the Rajpunyah Ceremony held at the Rajbari of Rangamati , the headman pays their dues to the mouza headman of the Chakma Circle in the traditional manner and surrenders their swords in the traditional manner every year. On 16 February 2003, the Chakma Royal Family organized a grand royal ceremony to crown prince Tribhuvan Aryadev Roy, the son of Raja Devashish and the silver Jubilee to the coronation.

Chakma Circle consists of 144 Mouzas of Rangamati District and a total 18 mouzas including 21 mouzas of Khagrachari District, Dighinala Upazila and 12 mouzas of Laxicchari upazila. This circle includes a total of ten districts of Rangamati. In this circle, there are many communities including Chakma, Marma, Tripura , Tanchangya , Pngkhoa, Lusai , Khumi , Bam , Banyogi , even Bengali too. Its area is about 5000 square miles and population is about 6 Lakh.
