An unfishlike system : Buddhist children outside CHT deprived from getting own religious education

Recently, a news caught the attention of people regarding the scenario of deprived from education about own religion where the Rakhaine students are the sufferer here. The news was published in Samakal daily nwespaper on 31 august, 2021.

The indigenous people are living for a very long time even before the birth of Bangladesh. It is a matter of melancholy that the education system still hasn’t been developed as targeted by the government. In matter of education about own mother language, the endeavours are going on although the reality is situated far behind.

However, regardless of this matter it was observed that the Rakhaine students are not getting the education about their own religion and morality but are compelled to study other books of religion like Islam and Christian.

The Rakhaine inhabited places like - in Kuakata, Patuakhali and Barguna districts, the scenario is more visible. The children are not getting the opportunity to study about their own religion which is Buddhism and most of them are going to participate in Primary School Certificate (PSC) board exam taking preparation relating with Islamic or Christian studies.

Some of the students whose guardians being aware of the situations are preparing for own religion studies but with the help of photocopies of books from the previous years. The complaints like lack of enough religion books supplies by NCTB and sometimes not having trained teachers in respect of Buddhist religion are optical.

The situation is salient especially when there are only 2 or a very few Buddhist students in the classes. Nevertheless, the lesser supplies of books regarding Buddhist religion and moral education is however observed and very much noticeable outside the Chittagong Hill Tracts areas. Even in Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh there are not much trained and experienced Buddhist teching teachers nor any fruitful measures in this matter are taken even by the reputable educational institutions as the students of Buddhism become minority in number in the classes.

When all over the world, people are becoming aware of own rights and duties, the indigenous students here are deprived from getting any effective education may it be on their own mother tongue or on their religion and morality which is grevious in nature and depressing to think.
