A glimpse of Naniarchar Upazila, Rangamati


Naniarchar is the 6th largest upazila of Rangamati hill district.It’s located at the Northern side of Rangamati. The travel distance from Rangamati sadar to Naniarchar upazila is 45 kilometer. This upazila is surrounded by the Kaptai lake.Naniarchar thana was established in 1969 and later on 1stAugust, 1983 it was changed into an upazila.

In the sixteenth century, when tyranny of the Mughals and the Portuguese increased in ‘Tainchhari’ the Chakmas settled in the deep forests of the Chittagong Hill Tracts. It is said that, a man named ‘Nanya’, who settled in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, was the owner of the char besides Chengi River. So, the place was named after him ‘Nanyarchar’ which is currently known as ‘Naniarchar’. The scenic beauty of Naniarchar is indeed very eye-soothing. Naniarchar is covered with many green hills blessed with the beauty of nature. Naniarchar Upazila is divided into four union parishads: Burighat, Ghilachhari, Naniarchar, and Sabekkhong. subdivided into 20 mauzas and 158 villages.


The bridge at the entrance of Naniarchar Upazila is the longest bridge in the whole Chittagong hill tracts. It is 500 meters long and 9.8 meters wide. The memorial of the freedom fighter BirShrestha Munshi Abdul Rauf is located at Burighat union of the upazila.

It is known that Naniarchar is the original home of the Jummapeople from the British period.. Over time, Muslims, Hindus and Christians have come here. In this upazila, mainly Chakma, Marma and Bengali live. This diversity of life has developed from a combination of geographical, political, socio-economic and cultural differences from other parts of the country.
